How to Make a Natural Stovetop Scent to Create a Calm Home

Creating a calm home doesn’t always require buying something new or starting another routine.
Sometimes, it’s as simple as the gentle scent of citrus, herbs, or spices warming on the hob.

“Stovetop scents” are one of the easiest and most natural ways to make your home smell calm and comforting — using ingredients you likely already have.

In recent years, I have become so much aware of all the chemicals we unknowingly invite into our homes. I am still learning and still have cheap candles lighting. A stovetop scent though is a great option that is cleaner, cheaper and safer so give it a try and let me know what you think!

What is a stovetop scent?

A stovetop scent (sometimes called a simmer pot) is made by gently heating water with natural ingredients like fruit peel, herbs, and spices in a saucepan.

As the water warms, the scent slowly drifts through your home. It’s subtle, natural, and never overpowering — unlike artificial air fresheners.

There’s no right or wrong way to do it. If it smells good to you, it’s working!

Why stovetop scents feel so calming

Scent has a powerful effect on how we feel in a space. Natural aromas can help a home feel warmer, softer, and more grounded.

What I love most about stovetop scents is that they don’t ask anything of you. You don’t need to stop what you’re doing or practice calm. The scent simply exists alongside your day.

Natural stovetop scent combinations to try

Orange peel and cinnamon stick – warm and comforting.
Lemon slices and rosemary – fresh and uplifting.
Apple peel and cloves – soft and cosy.
Lavender and bay leaf – calming without heaviness.
Vanilla extract and orange peel – subtle warmth.
